Short bio

Scott Bain is the host of The Reinventionalist, a show about people in the middle of changing their lives. Firefighter, college instructor, founder and long-term wanderer, he has rebuilt his life more times than he planned to, and now talks with other people while they're doing the same. He's based in Ubud, Bali.

Long bio

Scott Bain grew up moving. His Scottish immigrant father died when he was small, and after his mother remarried into Air Force life, new bases, schools and friends became the norm. In 1993 a chance conversation with a fire chief on a plane led to a 23-year career as a firefighter and paramedic, during which he trained hundreds of new paramedics and, on his days off, started a media company.

He worked the front line through the pandemic and retired in 2022. Then he spent a few years on the move: living on a boat, traveling through Europe and Asia, asking strangers questions and filling notebooks with the answers. He eventually made Ubud, Bali his base camp, at least for a while.

Today he produces and hosts The Reinventionalist, sitting with people during a change rather than after it, while the outcome is still unclear. He's also developing RE:CODE Basecamp, small in-person gatherings for people in the middle of something new, and building an apparel brand, a music learning system and an Indonesian-inspired culinary brand.

Outside the projects, he's chasing a long-deferred ambition to sit in with DJs and cover bands in bars from Bali to Spain to Scotland on piano and saxophone, and spends time in friends' Balinese and Spanish kitchens learning to cook recipes that have never been written down.
